Points Calculator for Renewals & Recertifications

NDT Certificate Renewal & Recertification Credit Calculator

What This Tool Does

Instead of sitting another exam, you can renew or recertify your NDT certificate by proving you’ve stayed active in the field. This calculator helps you track the points you need under ISO 9712:2021’s structured credit system.

Bottom line: You need 100 points over 5 years. Different levels have different rules about where those points come from.

The Requirements

Level Renewal Recertification
Level 1 Min 75 points from actual NDT work (Part A) Min 75 points from actual NDT work (Part A)
Level 2 Min 50 points from actual NDT work (Part A) Min 50 points from actual NDT work (Part A)
Level 3 Min 50 points from actual NDT work (Part A) 50-70 points from NDT work (Part A)
30-50 points from professional stuff (Part B)

What Counts as Points?

Part A (The Real Work):

  • Actually doing NDT (2 points per day, max 95 over 5 years)
  • Training courses (1-2 points per day depending on type)
  • Research work (1 point per week)
  • Teaching/training others (Level 2/3 only – 1 point per day)

Part B (Professional Development):

  • Technical seminars and conferences
  • Society memberships
  • Mentoring junior staff (Level 2/3 only)
  • Committee work (Level 2/3 only)
  • Working for certification bodies (Level 2/3 only)

About Evidence

Your certification body will want evidence for your claims. Keep it simple:

  • For NDT work: Job sheets, reports, employer confirmation
  • For training: Certificates, attendance records
  • For seminars: Programs, certificates, receipts
  • For procedures: Cover pages, review records

Don’t overthink it – they’re looking for reasonable proof, not a legal case.

If This Seems Like Too Much Hassle

You can always take the practical examination route instead. For renewal, you’ll need to pass a practical exam using at least 50% of the specimens required for initial certification. For recertification, it’s the full practical examination plus written elements.

Sometimes sitting the exam is honestly easier than gathering 5 years of paperwork and calculating points.
