Proficiency & External Competency Assessments

Proficiency tests

A proficiency test checks that an NDT technician can still do the job to the required standard after initial qualification. Tests are done under supervision on standardised test pieces or data. Employers use them to confirm continued capability before authorising work, and facilities use them as evidence at audit.

Key points

  • Confirms ongoing technical skill and accuracy
  • Conducted under supervision using standardised test pieces or data
  • Supports employer authorisation and audit evidence

External competency assessments

An external competency assessment is an independent evaluation of an NDT technician, carried out by Kuzer rather than by the technician’s own employer. Facilities use these assessments to meet NATA requirements for independent facility audits: an outside check that personnel are competent to the procedures and methods they work to.

Key points

  • Independent of the candidate’s employer
  • Supports NATA requirements for independent facility audits
  • Useful evidence of technician competence for audit, authorisation, and internal quality programs
